Where to install expansion joints.
Stucco Control Joints.
Exterior Plaster expansion joints.
We’re using the one-piece control joints is beneficial to relieve stress and help establish plaster thickness, in this video.
Control joints allow for stress relief in one direction to help reduce hairline cracking in cement plaster or stucco.
However, using control joints or what is also known as stucco expansion joints, is no guarantee of crack-free stucco walls.
Want stucco walls that don’t crack? Leave the stucco in the bags.
Vibrations and or movement of the structure cause cracks, not the stucco material.
They are excellent when you have two separate foundations butting up to each other that have been poured at different times or depths.
A control joint helps control separate foundations that settle or move independently.
Thus, you can avoid the dreaded natural crack that will develop within a year or two, sometimes an eight to a quarter inch wide. When this occurs, the new rainwater will now infiltrate your walls. Not good.
This is typical when one adds a new addition or remodel to their home.
